Great philosophers often have very sobering views about life and joy. A philosopher once said living is like having a row of people chained together, walking towards impending doom. Every human knows that a day lived means a day closer to death. As we are all moving towards death, there is no reason to have anything but despair in life.
As depressing as this philosophical thought is, there is some truth to it. We are all moving towards death in this life under the sun. However, for the Christian, this knowledge helps us to find joy in every moment, not despair.
How? We have at least two ways, listed below.
We find joy because we know eternal life awaits all who believe and accept Jesus as Lord and Savior
Death in this life is the first step to transition into eternity. In eternity, there will be no more sorrow and pain. A new heaven and earth will come, and every tear will be wiped from our eyes. That is our great hope. We know that after this life is over, we will live and reign with Christ in eternity.
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’[a] or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
Revelation 21:4, NIV
We find joy by recognizing the everyday blessings that God gives us
There is joy in this life. God has given us many blessings in our daily lives. We are alive, our minds can think, our eyes can see. We can enjoy simple pleasures like smiling, reading, or listening to music. He enables us to be productive, to share our lives with friends and family. To do things that make us smile and create lasting memories.
Although this life is not permanent, we can enjoy every day and find reasons to be thankful. God’s daily gift to us is to be joyful and do good while we live.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for Your gift of joy. Thank You for Your gift of eternal life. Thank You for giving us daily moments of joy in this earthly life. Help us to experience and treasure each joyful moment, and to give You all the praise and glory. In Your mighty name we pray, amen.
