Two Ways to Understand Divine Peace: A Christian Perspective

Divine peace is unique. It is different from the peace found in the world. Peace has been defined in many different ways. Some say that harmony leads to peace. Others say that when we all agree on everything, there is peace. From a community perspective, there is peace when there is no violence or war. There is peace when our public and social spaces are safe, and we have harmony within ourselves.

However, the peace of God is different. Jesus said this about peace:

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not be afraid
John 14:27

There are two perspectives we can pick from this verse.

1. Peace is a gift freely given by Jesus

We do not have to work for peace. Jesus gave it to us the moment we accepted Him into our lives. He left us a Helper to guide us into God’s peace. The Holy Spirit in us produces a truly divine and lasting peace.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness
Galatians 5:22

We find God’s peace by choosing to spend time with Jesus. Every day, Jesus gives us His peace when we seek Him intentionally. When we go to Him, He relieves our burdens and gives us rest.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest
Matthew 11:28

2. Divine peace remains even in difficult seasons

For Christians, hope, joy, and peace work together to carry us through life’s difficult seasons. Jesus does not give peace as the world gives. His peace comes with extra benefits to keep us grounded and rooted in Him. The peace that comes from above remains even when life seasons are difficult. We move in step with the Holy Spirit even in difficult seasons because we trust God and all His promises.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 15:13

Divine peace does not eliminate the chaos and difficult moments in our life. It allows us to be still before God. This way, we can hear and know what to do in all seasons.

Be still, and know that I am God
Psalm 46:10
